- From the perspective of the villains, this story is a direct sequel to DW: Planet of the Spiders. The Eight Legs' surprise over the fact that the Doctor is still alive indicates the Doctor has not encountered the Eight Legs since his third incarnation.
- The Doctor uses his UNIT connections to gain access to the Terra Nova facility, headed by Dr. Avishka Sangakkara.
- He references a stellar manipulator, similar to the Hand of Omega seen in Remembrance of the Daleks.
- The Doctor indicates he's learned how to protect himself from radiation poisoning by suspending his respiratory system — a lesson learned from the incident in Planet of the Spiders which triggered the Third Doctor's regeneration.
