Mandip Kaur Gill (born in Leeds, 5 January 1988[1]) to a westernised Indian Sikh family who ran a newsagents shop. Her family speak Punjabi and she has a working understanding of the language. She plays PC Yasmin Khan in series 11 and series 12 of Doctor Who.
Gill performed from a young as for her family as child. She is the youngest of six sisters and has a younger brother too. She grew up surrounded by driven female role models and given a strong work ethic. Her training was at Park Lane College, central Leeds where she studied Performing Arts then went on to graduate from the University of Central Lancashire, Preston in 2009 with a BA (Hons) in Acting. By her own admission, she cannot sing.
Before appearing in the series, her most widely known role was as a series regular in the soap opera Hollyoaks, which coincidentally also featured Tosin Cole, her series 11 co-star.
Gill appeared in Doctors for a five episode arc as a pregnant homeless woman Shazia Amin in 2016 (18.25-29) before a recurring guest role in 2017 for the popular ITV series The Good Karma Hospital as young widow Padma Kholi (episodes 1.2 and 1.6). Also in 2017 came the supporting role of Talia for all six episodes of the miniseries Loves, Lies and Records for the BBC.
Mandip was the second guest for the new podcast Rule Not the Exception on episode Killing It With Kindness (58m, 9 Feb 2020). The series highlights under-represented creative minds within the entertainment industry and is hosted by GKH stars Amrita Acharia and Sagar Radia.
