Shamash was the god of the sun in Mesopotamian mythology.
Gilgamesh initially believed that the Seventh Doctor was Shamash, though he did not look like a warrior. When the Doctor said he was a man of learning, Gilgamesh concluded that he was Ea, the god of wisdom.
