In the 12th century, Earl Godfrey had a herbalist who lived in his castle, Osbert. When the Early's wife Maud was taken ill, the responsibility fell to Osbert to brew a potion to cure her, and he was escorted into the nearby forest by Sergeant Alfred to forage for some necessary herbs. Essential though he was, the proud Earl did not seem to have much respect for Osbert, referring to him as simply "the herbalist" and not actually knowing his name. (AUDIO: The Green Man)
