Hieronymous was the leader of the Pharisees in Byzantium at around the time of Jesus Christ. In around 54, he ordered the stoning of a girl named Ruth who had dared to publicly announce her faith within his jurisdiction. This was an action he later came to regret, especially after mellowing in his old age, when he came to have a greater respect for those of other religious beliefs.

In 64, he took Barbara Wright into his home after she was was separated from the rest of the TARDIS crew. He cared deeply for her, which offended his daughter, Gabrielle, who thought Barbara was a spy. Later, he announced to Gabrielle that he intended to marry Barbara. This confession was overheard by Barbara, who responded angrily and eventually left the Hieronymous's house after the even caused the two to have a falling out. (PROSE: Byzantium!)
