According to some accounts, the title of "the Black Sun" referred to a star in the Wrarth Galaxy. According to one account, the once peaceful race of Meeps turned to violence and wars of conquest as the orbit of the Meep homeworld shifted toward this star, causing them to take on the banner of the Black Sun. Black Sun radiation was released by the Meeps' neutron drive star cruisers. Exposure to a concentrated burst of Black Sun radiation was able to temporarily render humans violent but still susceptible to the will of the tyrannical Beep. (COMIC: The Star Beast, AUDIO: Doctor Who and the Star Beast) Some people required more radiation than others. (AUDIO: The Ratings War)
Notably, many other accounts documented a "Black Sun" or "Great Black Eye" of great metaphysical relevance; an Order of the Black Sun made war on the early Time Lords. The nature and origins of this Black Sun were disputed.
