A ball was an object that people could thrown to catch, hit objects with or play games with.

John Smith used a ball to hit scaffolding to save a woman and her baby's life while out for a walk with Joan Redfern in 1913. (TV: Human Nature [+]Loading...["Human Nature (TV story)"])

The Toymaker used three balls to juggle in front of the Fourteenth Doctor while giving his speech about the origins of the first human game with a ball: catch.
