Sound maintenance engineers, in television and film production teams, have a broader job than a boom operator, though those in the position have often acted in that role. They are responsible for managing and maintaining various elements of the sound equipment used in the course of television and film production.[1]

The role of sound maintenance engineer was first credited in series 5 of Doctor Who. After series 5, boom operators were no longer credited, replaced in large part by sound maintenance engineers who were once given that title.
