Dove was a clockwork woman created by Sir Edward Fanshawe for his sexual pleasure.

When Honoré Lechasseur and Emily Blandish arrived at Edward's estate, Dove began to develop free will, choosing to save them from Edward's attack dogs. She left with them, wanting to explore the strange new ideas she was experiencing. Spending the night in a nearby village, Dove slept with Peter to pay for their beds. Peter kidnapped Dove, wanting her for a brothel he worked for in London.

In London, Dove met Sir Richard Hampden. She read A Vindication of the Rights of Woman by Mary Wollstonecraft at his house, and began to realise she could carve out her own destiny.

After witnessing Richard's death at the hands of her creator, Edward, Dove wanted to confront him. She returned to the estate and told him how she had developed as a person and no longer wanted the life she had been created for. Edward tried to threaten her after her windup key was lost, but Dove had outgrown the need for it and left. She wished to become a writer like Mary Wollstonecraft in London.
