Ernst Katastrophen was a Kommander within the SSSSSSS.

Born or raised on the planet Darvilleva-Q, Katastrophen was imprisoned in the "Hell Camps" (a holocaust for "subhuman" colonists on the planet). While being brought to the Hell Camps, Katastrophen suffered a leg injury that became infected. According to him, he had to pick out infected tissue. Though this saved his life, it gave him a permanent leg injury. Katastrophen spent four years in the Camps. This convinced him that he was better than all of the "subhumans" within the Camp.

After leaving the Camps, Katastrophen studied archaeology alongside various other "antique arts and sciences". It was presumably after finishing his studies that Katastrophen founded or joined the SSSSSSS. Using a submarine fitted with a warp drive, the SSSSSSS jumped across various worlds. On one of these jumps, the SSSSSSS visited the planet Dellah. While in the markets, Katastrophen learned of a rock from the planet Tyler's Folly holding the journals of Nils Kryptosa (which he hoped would lead him to the Tribe of Lillith and the Pool of Life from which the "Aryan Supermen" had formed) within it. Unfortunately for Katastrophen, the rock was sold to two students from the Neuroseismology Department of St. Oscar's University named Ash Juliandis and Lucretia Scannon. Katastrophen decided to kidnap Lucretia and bring the submarine to Tyler's Folly.

This action led to Ash (alongside Professor Bernice Summerfield) visiting Tyler's Folly. Shortly after arriving in the Inner World of Tyler's Folly, Katastrophen found Bernice Summerfield and brought her inside of the submarine. While Bernice was in captivity, the submarine was scuppered by explosive shellfish accidentally dropped onto it by members of the Tribe of Gug. After a short skirmish between the Tribe of Gug and the SSSSSSS which the Neo-Nazis lost, Katastrophen agreed to team up with Benny and look for the Tribe of Lillith and their Pool of Life. While trudging through the forests of the Inner World, the assembled party was attacked by a squadron sent by the Tribe of Lillith. While Benny opened fire on the Tribe members, Katastrophen's forces were massacred by the Tribe. Katastrophen managed to escape and was found by Lucretia. The two were found by a dirigible belonging to the Tribe of Lillith and brought inside. On discovering that the Tribe of Lillith were "subhuman apes", Katastrophen attacked the Tribe members and used the transmat onboard the dirigible to teleport into the Tribe of Lillith alongside Lucretia (something that drove Lucretia into a shellshocked state due to her molecular vertigo). While in the Pool, Katastrophen learned some of the truth of Tyler's Folly from the figure of Kryptosa within the Pool. The information Katastrophen learned shattered his Neo-Nazi facade. After being brought before the MEPHISTO Machine, Katastrophen helped his fellow voyagers into the Inner World escape the clutches of !X and sacrificed his life to help Benny, Ash, and Lucretia escape the Inner World. Not understanding this sacrifice (and wishing to escape the guilt of her actions during the attack of the Tribe of Lillith), Bernice inserted the character of Mr. Misnomer into her own mental narrative of the events in the Inner World.
