James MacFarlane was a journalist who shared several adventures with the Eighth Doctor.

James travelled to Victorian Edinburgh in the 1890s to investigate rumours regarding vampires. He encountered the Eighth Doctor there and they uncovered a den of vampires but found they were innocent. In actuality, a Bowship had been mentally influencing the people of Edinburgh.
