Mosasaurs were aquatic predators who lived in the warm, shallow waters of the Cretaceous period. They were closely related to snakes, and resembled a cross between a huge shark and a conger eel. The first, and only, sight most prey would have of a Mosasaur was of its huge jaws snapping at them as it exploded out of the water. Mosasaurs often lurked near watering holes or on the shoreline, hoping to ambush some unwary land creature when it lowered its guard to drink.
Mosasaurs varied greatly in size, growing larger and larger over the course of their long lives. The average Mosasaur was 10-12 metres in length, but bigger examples had been found in the fossil record. Mosasaurs had nostrils instead of gills, and needed to surface to breathe, just like whales. Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]
- The Mosasaur notably appeared in Episode 1.3 of Primeval. The profile provided in Prehistory Repeating Itself [+]Loading...["Prehistory Repeating Itself (feature)"] was, in fact, recycled from Cubicle Seven's Primeval game.
