By one account, Skaro had a single continent which took up just over a third of the planet's surface. Other than this land mass, the planet also had several small islands.

A depiction of the geography between the Kaled Dome (bottom) and the Thal Dome (top), with mountains in the Wastelands between. (TV: Genesis of the Daleks [+]Loading...["Genesis of the Daleks (TV story)"])

The Drammankin Mountains were located at the centre of the continent. In early Skaroene history, the Stone Age tribes of Skaro were split by the mountains, leading to the Thals living isolated on the west side of the continent and the Dals on the east.

As time passed and the Dals became the Kaleds, the Kaled capital came to be in a forest at the base of the mountains and near a lake. The Thal capital was located somewhere in the east, not far from the Kaled capital. In anticipation of hostilities, the Kaled bunker was built in the north, close to the sea. After the Skaro neutron bomb explosion, by this account the first act of the 250-year-long Thousand Year War, both races retreated to their bunkers; the Kaled Dome was built near the Kaled bunker and the Thals built the Thal Dome. In the years of the war, most of the continent became the Wastelands, with the forest around the old Kaled capital becoming the Petrified Forest and the lake becoming the Lake of Mutations.

During the development of the Daleks, Davros moved between the Kaled bunker and the old capital city, leaving Mark III Travel Machines in the ruins. After the Genesis Incident, the surviving Kaled fully mutated into Daleks and began living in these casings, turning the Kaled capital into the Dalek City. Meanwhile, the Thals survived in a small agricultural community along the coast.

After a few hundred years, the Thals lost their fertile land and came back to the centre of the continent, eventually facing the Daleks and triumphing in the Thal-Dalek battle. This led to a period of peace in which the Thals, based in the old Kaled capital, revitalised Skaro. However, Thal rule was destroyed in a day when the Daleks of the Kaled bunker emerged led by the Dalek Prime. The Thals fled the planet and the Daleks resettled into the old Kaled capital, erasing its history and using it as their base. As the Daleks moved on to interstellar plots, starting with the 2150s Dalek invasion of Earth, the Dalek city remained their base.
