Publisher's summary
At the heart of the ruined city of Arcopolis is the Fortress. It's a brutal structure placed here by one of the sides in a devastating intergalactic war that's long ended. Fifteen years ago, the entire population of the planet was killed in an instant by the weapon housed deep in the heart of the Fortress. Now only the ghosts remain.
The Doctor arrives, and determines to fight his way past the Fortress's automatic defences and put the weapon beyond use. But he soon discovers he's not the only person in Arcopolis. What is the true nature of the weapon? Is the planet really haunted? Who are the Eyeless? And what will happen if they get to the weapon before the Doctor?
The Doctor has a fight on his hands. And this time he's all on his own.

Notes
- This is the first book in the Tenth Doctor Adventures series to only feature just one person on the top half of the cover (discounting recent reissues with Rose Tyler removed from the cover). It is the first in which he is not travelling with a companion. As of February 2009 all of the Tenth Doctor Adventure novels announced for publication in 2009 also feature the Doctor travelling on his own, although, as is the case with this book, he is expected to work with "one-off" companions.
- This is the only "companionless" Tenth Doctor Adventure announced to date in which the Doctor does not combat a returning alien race.
Continuity
- This novel most likely takes place after Journey's End. The Doctor mentions the Pyroviles, placing it after The Fires of Pompeii, and his lack of a companion probably therefore places it after he stops travelling with Donna in Journey's End. Lance Parkin mentioned that his intention was to place it between Journey's End and The Next Doctor.
- The Doctor suggested that the Waterhive were responsible for the ghosts, they appeared in NSA: The Feast of the Drowned.
- This novel suggests the Ninth Doctor travelled by himself for a while after he regenerated. This can explain why he appears in Clive Finch's photographs without Rose as a travelling companion.
Timeline
- The Eyeless occurs after: TDL: The End of Time
- The Eyeless occurs before: NSA: The Sontaran Games
Audio release
- The story was released as an audiobook on 2x CD read by Russell Tovey.
