Creature from the Black Lagoon was a movie about a menacing creature that looked like a humanoid fish. The Sixth Doctor recounted having seen and enjoyed the movie. At Brighton's West Pier where Albert and Emily had claimed to hear inhuman noises, the Doctor talked about the movie. The year being 1936, he admitted that it would be a while before they would be able to see it. (BFA: Pier Pressure)

Izzy, while in Destrii's body, composed a letter to Max in which she told him she had been turned into the Creature from the Black Lagoon. (DWM: Children of the Revolution)

Behind the scenes

In the movie, fossil evidence established the "Gill-man" was a survivor of the Devonian Period when vertebrates began to occupy dry land. In Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, "The New Traveller's Almanac" talks about the discovery in 1930 (before the movie's events) of a female creature in the lagoon. The Almanac speculates that this is a hitherto unknown "Silurian throwback", the same error that named the Silurians.
