A sword is a handheld weapon usually made of metal, not unlike a large knife. It consists of a T-shaped handle and a long blade. Swords are far less effective than guns but many races utelise them as their initial weapon; it was used on many planets for thousands of years. On a minor note, "sword" and "words" are anagrams of each other, which helped the Second Doctor to turn a sword into a dictionary in the Land of Fiction. (DW: The Mind Robber)
