The film referenced in Hounded is the 1939 version of The Hound of the Baskervilles in which he played Sherlock Holmes.

In the real world, his image from The Hound of the Baskervilles was used to depicted Sherlock Holmes on the cover of the Virgin New Adventures novel All-Consuming Fire.

The regenerated Master's appearance from the novel First Frontier is based on Basil Rathbone in The Adventures of Robin Hood, according to author David A. McIntee (DWM 222).
