The first issue of the Doctor Who DVD Files - "The Ultimate Build-up Doctor Who Encyclopaedia" had a cover date of 14 January 2009.

Collectible loose leaf pages divided into seven categories that could be filed accordingly.

- First Contact shows the First Doctor and Susan surrounded by the Daleks.

- Each issue came with a DVD release covering two episodes.
- Reversible DVD sleeves enabled the collector to display one of two designs featuring either the Doctor and his enemies or his companions.
- "Is someone trying to take over Britain's shops?"
- It's just another day for Rose Tyler — until she's menaced by shop dummies that come alive and meets a man who will change her life forever, the Doctor! Together they discover an alien intelligence lurking below the Thames who is planning world domination! Can Rose and the Doctor save her mum, her boyfriend, and the rest of planet Earth?

- Four actors have now played Davros: Michael Wisher, David Gooderson, Terry Molloy and Julian Bleach.
- Roger Lloyd-Pack who played wheelchair-using Lumic broke his ankle a week before filming!
- In their first episode the Daleks said "Fire!"; "Exterminate!" came the following week.
- The Adipose were created using simulation software and helped by Stephen Regelous who worked on the groundbreaking movie The Lords of the Rings.
- Travelling in the Time Vortex the colours indicate blue for the past and red for the future.

- This card mounted first issue at the special introductory price of £1.99 rather than the regular £6.99 came with:
- A giant double-sided poster featuring on one side a DVD collector's wall chart and on the other a Doctor Who DVD Files poster features headshots of the Ninth and Tenth Doctor.
- A large "welcome" insert that opens up to show an annotated graphic montage that features on one side of the spine on the reversible DVD sleeves.
- Newsagents reservation card.
- Subscription offer details of £1 off the cover price and great gifts worth £50.
- 3 Character Options 5" action figures from Scarecrow, Judoon, Gold Dalek, Tenth Doctor with glasses, Weeping Angel and the Master.
- DVD of the Doctor Who TV movie featuring the Eighth Doctor
- DVD Storage holder for 14 DVDs (subsequent holders were priced at £6.99)
- An additional insert gave preview and release dates for the next four issues on one side and DVD Files website details on the reverse offering downloads, puzzles and games.

- The supporting website [1] gave online subscribers unlimited access to the magazine content as they were released (and the Doctor Who: Battles in Time comic strip pages). Subscription cost £3 per month or £25 per year.
- The supporting website also offered online games, downloads, wallpapers, and other content.
