The alien Nimon has promised the people of Skonnos that he will restore their empire to greatness if they honour him with sacrifices – and give him radioactive hymetusite crystals. When the TARDIS arrives, the Doctor and Romana are cast into the Nimon's labyrinthine power complex by the corrupt Skonnan scientist Soldeed. Is the Nimon all that he seems? Why does he need radioactive crystals? And will the Doctor ever repair the TARDIS?
