Den Watts

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference
Den Watts

Den Watts, nicknamed Dirty Den, was a fictional character who appeared in the British soap opera EastEnders. (TV: Army of Ghosts [+]Loading...["Army of Ghosts (TV story)"]) According to one account, he was a real individual rather than fictional. (PROSE: Mistaken Identity [+]Loading...["Mistaken Identity (short story)"])

The "ghost" of Den Watts confronts Peggy Mitchell. (TV: Army of Ghosts [+]Loading...["Army of Ghosts (TV story)"])

In 2007, with the popular ghost phenomenon, a storyline featured Den coming "back from the grave". He confronted Peggy Mitchell, who told him to get out of her pub, saying that the only spirits she served were gin, whisky and vodka.

It turned out the ghost who played Den, along with the rest of its kind, was a Cyberman from another universe that had come to invade Earth. (TV: Army of Ghosts [+]Loading...["Army of Ghosts (TV story)"])

Around the same time, Sophie messaged Ghostwatch, telling them that Dirty Den was back. (GAME: Ghostwatch [+]Loading...["Ghostwatch (video game)"])

According to one account, Gustave Lytton encountered Den Watts in the pub and mistook him for Kiston. (PROSE: Mistaken Identity [+]Loading...["Mistaken Identity (short story)"])

Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • Lytton confusing Den for Kiston in Mistaken Identity [+]Loading...["Mistaken Identity (short story)"] is a meta reference. Den Watts was played by Leslie Grantham, who also played Kiston in Resurrection of the Daleks [+]Loading...["Resurrection of the Daleks (TV story)"].
  • The EastEnders storyline depicted in Army of Ghosts [+]Loading...["Army of Ghosts (TV story)"] in which Den is said to have come "back from the grave" may be a nod to Den's infamous two on-screen "deaths" in the show's own continuity: the character was supposedly murdered in 1989, only to be "resurrected" 14 years later, where it was revealed he'd faked his death. The character was ultimately killed off for good in 2005, a year before Army of Ghosts aired. Incidentally, Den's killer in the show was his wife Chrissie Watts, portrayed by Tracy Ann Oberman, who appeared in Army of Ghosts as Yvonne Hartman.
