Eleazar was the leader of the Jewish rebels during the siege of Masada. He befriended Ian Chesterton when he and Barbara Wright became separated from the First Doctor. Eleazar made Ian his adviser. When it became obvious that the rebels could not hold out against the Roman army, Eleazar arranged for every man to kill his family, then the military men would kill the other men. Eleazar realised that Ian did not wish to kill Barbara and himself, so Eleazar arranged for Ian to be the last man standing. Eleazar was killed when he impaled himself on Ian's sword.
