Gaylord Lefevre was a professional gambler from the Old West who tried to cheat against the Celestial Toymaker, an act that cost him his freedom.

Gaylord Lefevre was a professional gambler who lived in the Old West, making a living from the winnings of his games.
One day, he was travelling along the Mississippi, playing cards with a group of men, shooting one of them with his revolver when he suspected the man of cheating. The Celestial Toymaker approached Lefevre, claiming to want to try his fortune in a game against him, privately in his cabin, an offer Lefevre eagerly accepted. The Toymaker led the way, but rather to a cabin, to a room in the Toyroom, passing the Toymaker's collections of "toys" as he did so.
Gaylord quickly and recklessly began the game with the Toymaker, momentarily becoming uneasy when they gained an audience but soon was distracted by his desire to beat the Toymaker. As they played over the span of some hours, Lefevre's success worsened as his luck began to go bad, so after a halt was called and the Toymaker left the room, Lefevre drew a sewing needle and began marking the cards to "even the score". Unbeknownst to him, the Toymaker was aware of his actions and altered the cards when he wasn't looking.
A few more hours later, when Lefevre and the Toymaker resumed their game, Lefevre expected to still have his hand of cards from earlier, becoming enraged when he discovered he had now only a hand of jokers; he pulled his revolver from his jacket, firing it at the Toymaker for cheating him, only for the bullet to drop to the table, as the Toymaker controlled the gravity in the Toyroom. The Toymaker, having enough of Lefevre, declared the game forfeit and transformed him into one of his toys.
After an unknowable amount of time later, when the Toymaker lured a Roman soldier into the Toyroom, they passed Lefevre, frozen in the same pose in his last free moment. (COMIC: The Greatest Gamble [+]Loading...["The Greatest Gamble (comic story)"])

Gaylord was a hypocritical and deceitful man, willing to murder his opponents if they cheated but had no qualms about cheating himself. He also seemed to place little value on other people's lives, dismissing the severity of murder so he could continue a game. When he blindly entered a game with the Celestial Toymaker, he seemed to not care what was at stake, only fixated on winning, arrogantly believing he had could best the Toymaker.
