John Morton was the Bishop of Ely in 1483.
When the time travelling William Shakespeare introduced himself to Richard III as Mr Seyton, Richard asked if he was not really the Doctor, which prompted Shakespeare to ask if Richard knew him. Richard shrugged this off, claiming that the question was in reference to Doctor John Morton, Bishop of Ely, who he hoped would be present so as to renegotiate his position as Lord Protector. In reality, however, Richard was aware of the Doctor's reputation among the many creatures who visited him to discover the truth about the Princes in the Tower and had taken to namedropping him whenever they turned up so that they would quickly flee and leave him alone.
