Dr Martin "Marty" Chesleworth was a scientist who worked aboard a space station.
Biography[[edit] | [edit source]]
Marty had a miserable time working aboard the space station as he felt incredibly lonely. He met Professor Artemis Vane, unaware that she was his time-travelling widow, who sat with him at lunch and made him feel less alone. Despite the age difference, he also seemed to be attracted to her, but recognised that it was strange that she would choose to spend time with him rather than one of the galaxy-class scientists aboard.
When the crab-like creatures caused the researchers to repeatedly forget what they had done, Marty tried without success to get through to them. He took the Sixth Doctor and Charlotte Pollard to Artemis when they arrived and helped her and the Doctor build a machine to sour the crabs' food source and make them leave, a task during which he was electrocuted and taken to the medical bay. He asked Artemis who she was before she departed with the Doctor and Charley, but she told him that she was no one.
Seventeen years later, Marty met a younger Artemis and married her. They were together for ten years, in the course of which he told her that his time aboard the space station had been the worst period of his life, before he died of a congenital disease about which nothing could be done. He was about fifty when he died. (AUDIO: These Stolen Hours)
Personality[[edit] | [edit source]]
Marty was a shy and nervous man which caused him to feel isolated during his time on the space station. He was able to emerge from his shell when interacting with Artemis and greatly enjoyed spending time with her, but he was suspicious of why she chose to spend time with him given his lowly position.
