Mass Observation was an organisation which carried out surveys during World War II to determine the life expectancy of different parts of the population of the United Kingdom. After the war, the information gathered by the British government led to the foundation of a committee named Death Watch, of which Dame Emily Shaw, mother of Liz Shaw, was a member.
