The archangel Michael was Lucifer's primary nemesis in Christian lore in the 19th century, according to Matthew Stobbold. As such, it was highly symbolic that one church which had been built to contain a fire elemental (often confused for the Devil himself) was named for Saint Michael. (PROSE: The Burning)
