Worldbuilding[[edit] | [edit source]]
- Queen Carla is the ruler of the Twelve Planets, and a vampire.
- The Temple of the Veils was once occupied by the Veils, monks who meditated on the meaning of death.
- The Veils called the now-mythical Hidden Planet the Doorway to Death.
- Jack once saved Persis' planet, the Veda. According to legend, he is destined to return from the Hidden Planet and save it once more in a time of crisis.
- There are temples dedicated to Captain Jack on the Veda.
- Dark gravity affects time dilation, speeding time up locally and accelerating ageing, so that an approach would feel like thousands of years.
- Jack theorises that the Eternal Light is responsible for the Night Clouds.
- Persis is unfamiliar with Christmas or Christmas trees.
- The group celebrate Christmas on the winter solstice, and then the Vampire Solstice in summer, year after year. Jack teaches them Christmas carols, including "Good King Wenceslas". Carla refuses to join in on the singing in the early years, but eventually relents.
Notes[[edit] | [edit source]]
The title of the story is a reference to a line from the poem "Ozymandias," by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Jack quotes a different line of the poem, "nothing beside remains," within the story.
Continuity[[edit] | [edit source]]
- With enough centuries (indeed millennia) behind him, Jack's hair has continued turning grey. (TV: Last of the Time Lords)

- Jack says his family situation is complicated. (TV: Adam, Exit Wounds)
