Doctor Patterson was the medical officer on the Euro Sea Gas refinery commanded by John Robson. While out on one of the off-shore rigs, he fell under the mental control of the weed creature. He was later freed from it's control when the creature was destroyed by the Second Doctor. (TV: Fury from the Deep)
