- Joss Ackland, Harry Andrews, Bernard Archard, Robin Bailey, George Baker, Ian Bannen, Geoffrey Bayldon, John Carson, Peter Cushing, Allan Cuthbertson, James Ellis, Frank Finlay, Robert Flemyng, Michael Gough, Jeremy Kemp, Dinsdale Landen, T. P. McKenna, Donald Pickering, Peter Sallis, John Standing, Patrick Stewart and Peter Vaughan were considered for the role before Terence Alexander was cast.
- Ravensworth was the first historical figure to appear in the series since Solictor Grey in The Highlanders (although an android disguised as King John and fictional constructs based on Blackbeard, D'artagnan, and Cyrano de Bergerac had appeared in the interim), and the first real world person of any sort to be portrayed in the series since Jeremy Thorpe in The Green Death.
