The Eleventh Doctor claimed that Dalek meant "Metal-Cased Hatey Death Machines" in Skaronian. (PROSE: Nothing O'Clock)
Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]
Notably, the audio story Guilt gave a different etymology to the word "Dalek", suggesting that it originated in the Dal language and was a corruption of the a prophecy. This prophecy ended with the phrase"…and on that day, men will become as gods"; the final word was pronounced "Dal-ek" in the Dal verse.
In addition, many sources posit a language simply called "Dalek", and some (such as Genesis of Evil) support the idea that the Daleks' humanoid forebears already bore that name, making it unlikely the meaning would be as specific a description of the post-neutronic war War Machine Daleks as Nothing O'Clock posits.
