Talk:K9 Mark III

Discussion page

Master as creator[[edit source]]

I removed this line: "If the series had continued, the Master would have been revealed as K-9's true creator." This is one of those cases where a source needs to be provided as I can't find anything to support this, and certainly it doesn't coincide with The Invisible Enemy.

Baker's End?[[edit source]]

What's the evidence that the "robot dog" from PROSE: Mrs Frimbly's Festive Diary is K9 Mark III? Danochy 03:05, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

I believe this is an application of the "Homeworld Principle". Magrs established his "robot dog" to be synonymous with K9 in his Short Trip PROSE: Kept Safe and Sound, and so, gets to keep writing stories about it that should be acknowledged as being about the same individual.
If you're asking why K9 Mark III specifically, I'm not sure; possibly a point of minute continuity, possibly something in Kept Safe and Sound which eludes me. You had better ask User:Epsilon the Eternal.
Hope this helped… Scrooge MacDuck 03:10, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
Yes, sorry I should've been more specific. My question pertains to how we know this is K9 Mark III and/or the same model of robot dog as was in Kept Safe and Sound. Danochy 03:17, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
Long story short, the K9 in Mrs Frimbly's Festive Diary describes several 1970s annual stories which featured K9 Mark III. Though, I'd be willing to have the Magrs' K9 be housed in an "unclear variation" section in the main K9 article. 03:29, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for your explanation. If he describes stories from Doctor Who Annual 1981, that seems pretty clear cut to me, although I'm obviously not aware of the context in which they were described. Danochy 04:05, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Appearances in annuals[[edit source]]

Have we ever had any story confirm that K9 Mark III was the character who appeared in the annuals, or is that just kind of what the editors presumed when the Wiki started? I know the stories feature Adric and K9 without Romana, but saying "That K9 is the K9 from K9 and Company" feels to be a stretch. OS25🤙☎️ 22:44, 7 April 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, I understand this. As an extension, the "robot dog" used by Paul Magrs in a few of his stories, who is clearly the K9 from the annuals, as confirmed by Kept Safe and Sound and Mrs Frimbly's Festive Diary, really feels out of place on this page. I personally believe that a separate page should be potentially created for this unspecified model. 22:47, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
I almost feel like I would be fine with the page saying "A third version of K9" instead of "K9 Mark III." I also think it might be beyond interests for us to say K9 Mark III appeared before A Girl's Best Friend. OS25🤙☎️ 04:11, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

It seems to me that the best option here is to add these sections to the pages of both K9 Mark II and III. There is no evidence of the placement of these stories, and they do not really make sense in the setting of series 18. In the stories, they are said to be escaping trapped in E-Space still, for instance. So really it's clear they meant K9 to be K9 Mark II, and just didn't know he was leaving or that the Doctor and Adric would escape from E-Space immediately after Romana left. I think having this info on both of the K9 pages is the best option, similar to the discrepancy between Pandad IV and Goth. OS25🤙☎️ 21:22, 10 April 2021 (UTC)

Upon further examination of Kept Safe and Sound and its ilk, there doesn't actually seem to be anything connecting that K9 to the annual K9, as I misinterpreted a section of Mrs Frimbly's Festive Diary. So should the KSaS K9 get its own page, due to its biography being hard to reconcile with any other K9s (barring the one from the annuals however, if we accept that it is a different model from Romana's, but this'll need further discussion). 11:10, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
Several years later, my current take is that a new page should be created, K9 (Inter-Galactic Cat). We can say on that page that this was a K9 who traveled only with the Fourth Doctor and Adric. In my opinion, these stories could easily be set before Romana leaves, and there might just be some wacky reason she's not in the story, as is the case with a lot of Doctor Who Magazine comics from this era.
Then we can just mention this version of K9 on both the K9 Mark II and III pages, with clarity that identifying the model is impossible, unless a future story explains this somehow. How does that sound? OS25🤙☎️ 23:32, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
