Placement[[edit source]]
Seeing this template in use over on Davros, I must admit I am not overly keen on it being placed at the very top of the article. Firstly, I'm not sure why galleries deserve to be linked to at the very top of the article over anything else like appearances subpages. Secondly, surely the best place for links to galleries would be in infoboxes a la appearances and aliases.

- Agreed, particularly given how many templates are already at the top of some pages. I don't think a gallery is anymore deserving of a template at the top of the page than a list of appearances. Jack "BtR" Saxon ☎ 23:45, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
- I would very much like to nix adding text to the tops of articles, as well. Infobox seems sensible. I say we should explore that.

- It's a thought. At any rate, speaking as its creator, the current version is very much a placeholder. But I do think something more visible than an ordinary infobox field is warranted. Galleries need to be easily available as a quick resource for casual readers. Scrooge MacDuck ⊕ 23:31, 18 March 2023 (UTC)
- Personally, out of all the options offered, I think I prefer the button mentionned above. In general, I am really not for the link to be put in the infobox, as i think galleries overall should be more visible. One of my suggestion would be to introduce tabbed pages, and thus be able to have a gallery tab, and appearance tab with the list of appearances. I think it's both not too intrusive while also extremely easy to access. It is something I have seen done on plenty of other wikis, and generally, it is a page formatting I've come to appreciate as an user, as it makes it really easy to get information even through a casual search.
No matter how we decide to implement the link to the galleries, the link itself should always be on top of the page. That’s where most wikis have it, if they got galleries that are not sections on the main page. It’s easily accessible because you don’t have to look for it, and it just looks better than dumping it in a random section of the article. Personally, I like both Liria’s tabbed galleries idea, but also the current way the link is implemented, which actually does look good. Danniesen ☎ 19:39, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
The button idea makes a lot of sense. Is visible without being bigger than it needs to be. TheGreatGabester ☎ 20:51, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
- Here's a slightly more radical approach: repurpose the ImageLink template, and turn that into the new GalleryLink. I'd argue that it's overkill, to have two image-related templates at the top of an article. TheGreatGabester ☎ 22:59, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
- I think that's fair, but really only for pages that have fleshed-out and "finished" Gallery subpages. Davros doesn't need both, but character pages with only the Image button still need that.
Here's a very different idea: What about "Gallery" as an infobox variable, like how we currently link to "List of Appearances" subpages? – n8 (☎) 16:26, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
- It's a thought. But I suspect it won't be long before we implement a subpage-tabs system, and it'd be easy to bot-replace {{gallerylink}} with that template on all the articles where it's use, but less easy to remove an infobox field… Scrooge MacDuck ⊕ 16:38, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
