Third Way was a filming location for the Doctor Who season 2 story The Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["The Dalek Invasion of Earth (TV story)"].

History[[edit] | [edit source]]

Pre-filming[[edit] | [edit source]]

HM Government Pavilion, seen in The Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["The Dalek Invasion of Earth (TV story)"], was located on Third Way,[1][2][3] having been built for the British Empire Exhibition of 1924 and 1925.[2]

Filming[[edit] | [edit source]]

Location filming on Third Way for the fourth episode "The End of Tomorrow"[1][2] occurred on the first day of filming for the serial on 23 August 1964.[1][2][3] Taking part in the day's filming were Jacqueline Hill playing Barbara, Ann Davies playing Jenny, Alan Judd playing Dortmun and Dalek operators Robert Jewell, Gerald Taylor, Nick Evans and Ken Tyllsen.[1] Third Way was the final location at which filming took place that day[3] and the second of two in Wembley, the first having been Engineers Way on the other side of the estate.[2] Filming had started at around 6am in central London but director Richard Martin had an agreement with the police to leave the area by a certain time, which was around or after 10am, necessitating that the final sequences of the day be shot elsewhere.[3]

The sequence shot at this location depicted a dustcart being driven by Barbara, with Jenny also aboard, smashing into a Dalek cordon.[1][2][3] The cordon featured a total of four Daleks, including one dummy.[3] Location filming for the serial continued two days later on 25 August with shooting at the closed Wood Lane tube station and St Katharine's Docks.[4]

Post-filming[[edit] | [edit source]]

In 1975, HM Government Pavilion was demolished. The two stone lion statues which stood outside were subsequently rehoused at Woburn Safari Park.[5] A refurbishment of the lions was completed in 2016.[6]
