We've got a couple of important quirks for a fan written wiki, so let's get them out of the way first.

British English, please

We generally use British English 'round these parts, so if you use another form of English, please be sure you set your spell checker to BrEng, and take a gander at our spelling cheat card.

Spoilers aren't cool

We have a strict definition of "spoiler" that you may find a bit unusual. Basically, a spoiler, to us, is anything that comes from a story which has not been released yet. So, even if you've got some info from a BBC press release or official trailer, it basically can't be referenced here. In other words, you gotta wait until the episode has finished its premiere broadcast to start editing about its contents. Please check the spoiler policy for more details.

Re: Referencing[[edit source]]

HI, thought I'd chuck this here rather than on the forum for you. Tardis:Manual_of_style#Citation explains it all.
Aside from the sheer number of varied sources (just take a look at the Tardis:List of prefixes or Tardis:Canon policy, we're not the only wikia that uses this system(s) (I've often read through articles on wikipedia that uses a combination of the author date and footnote systems). So basically we use the brackets and citation within the body (similar to the author date system) within the body of articles for in-universe articles while we use the footnote system for out-of-universe articles (which means our out-of-universe articles do share a familiar feel to them as wikipedia does).

As a result of some other quirks (mainly on TV, novel and audio drama etc pages) which has a section called 'references' (denoting references to in-universe stuff) the space for the reflist on out-of-universe articles is called 'Footnotes'. This discussion has been around through this wiki more than once. Forum:Episode names a little different is one of the discussions it went through.

I would say we're not the only wiki that uses this system, MemoryAlpha, StargateWiki which also deal with different sources use this system.

As I said it's not just one source of stories we've got a couple of dozen different prefixes that will affect how a piece of information is received by the reader and can then be followed or discounted whilst reading the article. --Tangerineduel 07:37, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

I would also add that the referencing is relatively consistent through the novel, TV, audio drama etc pages as the in-universe pages (except they're in brackets) whilst we maintain the out-of-universe as ref tagged footnote system, in common with wikipedia etc. --Tangerineduel 07:45, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Publisher's Summary[[edit source]]

In (another quirk) 'Publisher's Summary' means 'blurb' see The Sirens of Time or Alien Bodies, they're both called 'Publisher's Summary'. The only place where 'Summary' is used are the short fiction articles and comic strip articles. Thanks. --Tangerineduel 10:07, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Prefix[[edit source]]

DWN is a prefix referring to Doctor Who novelisations, you should use ST for the Short Trips books. Americanwhofan 12:27, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Christmas cheer[[edit source]]

Happy holidays!

As this fiftieth anniversary year comes to a close, we here at Tardis just want to thank you for being a part of our community — even if you haven't edited here in a while. If you have edited with us this year, then thanks for all your hard work.

This year has seen an impressive amount of growth. We've added about 11,000 pages this year, which is frankly incredible for a wiki this big. November was predictably one of the busiest months we've ever had: over 500 unique editors pitched in. It was the highest number of editors in wiki history for a year in which only one programme in the DWU was active. And our viewing stats have been through the roof. We've averaged well over 2 million page views each week for the last two months, with some weeks seeing over 4 million views!

We've received an unprecedented level of support from Wikia Staff, resulting in all sorts of new goodies and productive new relationships. And we've recently decided to lift almost every block we've ever made so as to allow most everyone a second chance to be part of our community.

2014 promises to build on this year's foundations, especially since we've got a full, unbroken series coming up — something that hasn't happened since 2011. We hope you'll stick with us — or return to the Tardis — so that you can be a part of the fun!
