"Medicine man" was a term applied to prehistoric doctors and shamans. A group of medicine men trapped Hetocumtek inside a totem pole. (SJA: The Curse of Clyde Langer) This usage may, in fact, have been referring to the Doctor , as people often misquote the Doctor's name as a "medicine man" or "physician".
