We've got a couple of important quirks for a fan written wiki, so let's get them out of the way first.

British English, please

We generally use British English 'round these parts, so if you use another form of English, please be sure you set your spell checker to BrEng, and take a gander at our spelling cheat card.

Spoilers aren't cool

We have a strict definition of "spoiler" that you may find a bit unusual. Basically, a spoiler, to us, is anything that comes from a story which has not been released yet. So, even if you've got some info from a BBC press release or official trailer, it basically can't be referenced here. In other words, you gotta wait until the episode has finished its premiere broadcast to start editing about its contents. Please check the spoiler policy for more details.

Redlinks are good!

Hiya :) Thanks for your edits to the Earth mammals pages. I hope you're enjoying playing the Game of Rassilon. However, I must ask you not to deprive articles of their redlinks, as you did at porcupine. Redlinks, like that articles link to the non-existent salt, provide a valuable counter. The more redlinks there are to a word, the higher it goes up the list at Special:WantedPages, and therefore the more likely it is that someone will create hte pages.

If you've been taking out redlinks on other Earth mammals pages, please now put them back. Think of it this way: you'll have gotten double points in the game for making an honest mistake! That's a deal, right?

No worries. Easy enough mistake to make. I didn't figure you were being malicious. Yeah, our general rule of thumb around here is that anything that is mentioned in a narrative potentially gets a page. And salt is clearly mentioned in several stories. We just haven't gotten around to writing the page yet.

Recent category adding

Hi, I've rolled back a series of your edits where you've added categories like Category:United States of America locations to Wall Street, this article (and similarly others you've added "country/region locations" categories) are already within a sub-category of USA locations. See Category:New York City locations, you can see that it's within the USA locations category. So because it's in that category the USA locations category doesn't need to be added to this article. The same goes for European locations.

Usually the most specific category had been added, the more general location categories are an upper level category used to hold the sub-categories or for general subjects that don't fit into the smaller sub-categories. --Tangerineduel / talk 14:14, September 23, 2011 (UTC)

That's fine. Everyone has to learn and making mistakes is part of that.

Though, I would suggest exploring the wiki, categories and all so you can get a handle on the logic of how everything works.

The Manual of Style while long does give explanations of most of the questions that are likely to arise.

Recent summary adding

I've noticed that you've been adding summaries to some of the short story pages. However, these have been taken verbatim from the Doctor Who Reference Guide, which is Plagiarism according to this wiki's rules. Please undo at your earliest convenience. Doug86 14:01, September 24, 2011 (UTC)

Pic tips

Hey, great job on most of your pic uploads today! Thanks for taking the time to capture some relatively obscure characters. They were all nicely licensed and well within our size limits.

I did have to delete a few, though, because they were longer than they were wide, which is especially problematic on pages where there's not likely to be much text. Stick to pictures that approach widescreen (16:9) dimensions. (See T:ICC for more.) This means you sometimes do have to crop things.

Note, also, that minor characters don't necessarily have to appear in a one-shot. Two-shots are acceptable, especially when the other person in the frame is well known. For instance, the vidographer at Donna's wedding (Rodri, is it?) is, I think, only in two-shots with the Tenth Doctor. Since we know who the Tenth Doctor is, there's no particular problem in Rodri's infobox pic including the Tenth Doctor. Also, take care to remove any black which frames the pic, which you tend to get when you take the whole frame.

In general, though, your pics today were great! Keep 'em comin'!

By the way

Just so you know, it is not acceptable for a user just to edit pages that give them achievements; as you seem to have over the past 24 hours. Achievements are there to encourage users to edit there as well as other places on the wiki; you should not just edit there. Your recent edits mainly been around Torchwood television stories and Sarah Jane Smith audio stories.

Please remember that editing soley for achievement reasons can get you blocked and kicked of the Game of Rassilon, which you and we don't want. So just remember to edit every where you can on the wiki, not just in the places where there are achievements. MM/Want to talk? 20:16, December 18, 2011 (UTC)

X century individuals

Please note that a person's age does not factor into what century of individual they are. (i.e. 20th century individual) The only factor that really counts is the era we see them in or hear about them in. In other words, if we see a person in a sotry that take place in 2009, we say they are 21st century individuals. Even if they are 50 years old. However, if they mention something from 1980 and that they were present there, then they would be 20th and 21st century individuals. MM/Want to talk? 23:28, January 29, 2012 (UTC)

Exactly. We don't know there background, for all we know they just have 'pop out the ground' or an alien from the future. If that was the case to say a century purely based in age would be wrong. It is simpler, and makes more sense to only categorise them by what era we see them in. MM/Want to talk? 23:41, January 29, 2012 (UTC)

Short block for spelling

Sorry about this, but I need to implement a short block on you so that you can understand the importance of following T:SPELL. As it says at the top of this very page, British English, please. If you had introduced American spellings onto page, I might not block you. But you have recently reverted back to American spellings on namespace:0 pages like Boar (Mad Dogs and Englishmen), which means you're actively — though possibly not maliciously — undoing existing correct spelling. (In the case cited, the spelling is fulfil not fulfill, as is outlined at T:SCC.) Please don't think this blocking reflects badly on you, or suggests that you're generally doing poor work here. Your contributions are valued and appreciated. However, as one of our more prolific editors, it must be stressed how important it is that you adhere to our spelling rules. Since you work on so many pages, there's the likelihood is that you would spread/are spreading spelling errors throughout the wiki.

For the three days you're blocked, you retain the ability to leave messages on this page, so if you have questions, please do ask them. I'd also strongly suggest that you read T:SPELL, Help:Spell checking and T:SCC, and that you take some time to generally explore the differences between British and American spelling on various websites around the web.

I think I might know what happened. My hard drive recently crashed so I've been using a shared computer, so while I had installed a British English dictionary on my computer, I didn't want to on this one, as the person I'm sharing it with does a lot of work which requires American English. Still, I am relatively familiar with most British spellings and have tried to use them whenever possible. I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. Thank you for adding the IMDb links to the pages I create regarding the crew of the Doctor Who TV movie. I would have added them myself, but I didn't really see it as a major thing to add, hence I put a stub on the article. Can you make sure that if you add a IMDb link to an article to a minor crew person or cast persons page, you removed the stub - all these minor pages need is a description of what they did/played and their IMDb link.

Species thingie in infobox

No . . . and yes, to answer your question. No, it's not "new" policy. The discussion to change race to species, at least in dab terms, was started last July and formally closed last month. So it had a good, long marination process. Granted, it wasn't a specific discussion to change variable names, but the concept preferencing species over race was a part of that discussion. And no one objected to the change.

But yes, I screwed up the coding slightly. I forgot to allow for the instances of race already in the system. That's been corrected now, so thanks for catching it!

However, please don't use race in any new articles as there's no guarantee that race will always be supported. Contrary to your assertion, it's actually quite an easy thing to change the variables out, and it is on my long-term list of goals to actually change all instances of race to species, then drop race from the template code. But that bot run is low priority, so race still has a few months left in 'er yet.

Category:DWA comic stories

Hi, please don't add Category:DWA comic stories to any stories that are already categorised into Category:Tenth Doctor DWA comic stories or Category:Eleventh Doctor DWA comic stories. As these two categories are sub-categories of Category:DWA comic stories and therefore are already in that category. Much the same way that there are 13 subcategories in the Category:DWM comic stories and no stories in that category there should just be the sub-categories in the DWA comic stories category and no stories. --Tangerineduel / talk 08:59, April 2, 2012 (UTC)

Graphic novel issues

Since you didn't provide me a link, I had to take a quick look at your contribution history. Don't see anything on the front page to suggest that you've been working on graphic novels at all. Could you please provide a link to wherever you're having this problem? Hard to diagnose your problem without specifics. In the meantime, I've taken the precautionary step of formally changing links to the now-obsolete {{Infobox Graphic Novel}}. As has been widely mentioned in the forum, all stories are now handled by {{Infobox Story}}, which doesn't even have the variable you mentioned. Again, give me more specifics if you're still experiencing the problem and I'll fix your problems over the next 24 hours.

Uncredited tag removal

There wasn't any source stated on any of those articles.

IMDB doesn't count. See T:SOURCES - "Avoid using non-peer-reviewed sources such as Wikipedia, the Internet Movie Database, blogs, or even the TARDIS Index File as cited sources for information such as airdates, casting, etc." . --Tangerineduel / talk 06:41, April 6, 2012 (UTC)

Jaguar

At Jaguar, you removed category:Earth predators and gave a good reason. Then you immediately re-added it. If I didn't know better, I'd say you were deliberately trying to game the system, which is explicitly against the Game of Rassilon rules. Minor edits are certainly okay, even encouraged, within the spirit of the game, but doing and undoing the same edit, without good cause, aren't. I see no reason for you to have removed and added the category except to gain points in the Game of Rassilon. Please don't let it happen again. The whole point of the game is to improve articles, not just change their state.

Pic sizes

Thanks for your recent pic uploads! However, do be careful about pic sizes. There's really no need for pics that are 2000 px wide, since they're never displayed at a width greater than 300px. As outlined at T:ICC, you should be aiming for file sizes of 100kb or less. In practice, it's usually easy to get pics well below 50kb. Do remember that a lot of users (stats say up to 20%) are viewing our site through mobile devices, which have relatively slower, wireless connections. Thus, we should be trying, where possible, to use smaller images so as to speed delivery of pages to mobile devices.

The image you added, as I stated the image should be widescreen, yours was more portrait and also did not look at good in the infobox since it was the wrong aspect ratio. I have a feeling the image comes from Fragments, and is certainly not a promotional image.

I also stated that the current image is awful. Both were. Neither of them are/were suited to being and infobox pics - there are much better ones out there, we just need to find them.

As a side note, User:CzechOut deleted the images that I have stated above.

Tenth Doctor

Simply, the same as above. I was tasked with looking for a Tenth Doctor image by CezchOut, and this was one of the ones that I found. If you are unhappy with it, I would be than willing to upload the other versions that I have found and have a talk page discussion about it.

"What we really need is a more characteristic Tenth Doctor pic that's tight, left looking and preferably smiling rather than the dour I'm-about-to-die thing that's currently going on"

The above statement is what CzechOut gave to me, if you want to find an image to find that, it be great. Like I said, feel free to start a talk page discussion, I'd be more than happy to say my views, I not going to just say "My image was better than yours, don't think about changing it back", because I want to see if what you can find in regards to an image and get your views on the current image. I hope you understand.

Lastly, as a side note, this was not a criticism of you ability to choose images, it was purely keeping to our policy. I don't want you to be reading this and thinking "He hates me" or "he's a <insert vulgar expression>", I want you to know I want what is best for this wiki and it's community. I hope you can understand why I did, what I did and I hope that you will decide to start the talk page discussion (does not need to be right now). Images must work at the thumbnail level

Heya :) You've uploaded a lot of great pics over the past few days. Keep 'em comin'!

There have been a few misses, though, and so I wanted to explain one of the key, but more subjective, aspects of T:IUP/T:ICC.

Most people who visit our site never click on a thumbnail, and so they never see the picture the way that you do when you upload it. Heck, at least 20% of our users are mobile users and so they're looking at the site on a phone screen which doesn't allow for them to see it full resolution.

Therefore, the picture has to work at the thumbnail level.

This means that you should consider the following when choosing a pic:

Is the image of a darkly- or unusually-lit scene? If so, it's probably not appropriate.
Does this image have more than 3 people in it? If so, none of them are likely very distinct at thumbnail size.
Are all of the subject's backs to camera? If so, don't use it, because we're not used to seeing characters from behind, and therefore they're going to be hard to recognise at full resolution, much less at thumb size.
Are the subjects filmed from a sufficient distance to see most or all of their legs in the frame? If so, it's not going to render well at the thumbnail level. Generally, it's best to work with frames that are either very tight on the face or that capture no more than a waist-up shot of them.

Strong, bright images, face-front, face-dominant. That's what we need in order for our pictures to actually illustrate our articles for all of our users.

Yep, I'd agree. You've done a fine job in most instances. But there just have been some in this latest bunch that caught my eye as being off. Not sure I see the distinction you're trying to make between character pages and story pages. A thumbnail is a thumbnail is a thumbnail. It's not like by being on a particular type of page that the guidelines change. Please do not change an image just because it looks promotional. It either is a promotional image, in that case it should be removed or it isn't, in what is case is can stay. Always check first. MM/Want to talk? 10:34, May 9, 2012 (UTC)

Screenshots should be .jpg, but will have be .png if that is all that is available. As for promotional images, they are not to be used on in-universe articles. However the point still stands, if your not sure whether an image is a promo of not, just check. MM/Want to talk? 11:04, May 9, 2012 (UTC)

Edit conflict

I see at talk:Tenth Doctor that we got into an edit conflict. The easiest resolution was simply to skip over your comments, whatever they were. Sorry about that, but the newest poll was, in my view, a bit premature and needed to be closed before people put too much effort into it. Besides, at the time I started editing my post no one had voted in a way that was suggested a different consensus from the previous poll.

It's not really time for a new poll there. We need to be gathering more pics that address the central problem that started the move for the infobox switch. Namely, we need a lot more pics that are true closeups. So I've added some new pictures and invited people to add even more. We can take our time with this discussion, as opposed to the Eleventh Doctor one, because there's not really any new Tenth Doctor stuff comin out any time soon. (That we know of.)

Again, not trying to squelch your views. We were just both in the same place at the same time.
