Ace was working as a waitress in an Iceworld bar before she joined the seventh Doctor in his travels.
She was the final companion in the 1963 - 1989 television series. However, this meant that when the decision was made to launch a series of original novels continuing from the TV series, Ace was by default the ongoing companion.
