Sontaran heavy weapon. The Doctor feared the Sontarans would barrage Earth with photonic missiles in response to an occupation by the Rutan Host, circa 1900.(DW: Horror of Fang Rock)
In 2370 at the Battle of Antares, A Sontaran Linx-class cruiser destroyed a Rutan assault cruiser with a single photonic missile after the Rutan vessel lost shields. This indicates that the weapon could be configured to an anti-ship role in addition to surface bombardment. (MA: Lords of the Storm)
The Rutan Host employed "photonic bombs" in their attack on the Sontaran Homeworld in the 25th or 26th century. It is unknown if these weapons are similar to photonic missiles.(DWM: Pureblood)
