So I'm curious what new and old Whovians think about the fact that our next Dalek story will probably be different from previous ones. Hopefully. And I don't just mean "far and away better" when I say different.

Recap: The only true Daleks we've seen in new Who, were in The Stolen Earth/Journey's End, and Victory of the Daleks. And possibly "Dalek," if that Dalek's backstory wasn't a lie. Plus the Cult of Skaro, but they were a separate culture whose personalities were (intentionally) nothing like normal Daleks. So really, the Daleks in TSE/JE were the first and only time new-Whovians have ever seen Daleks (as a culture or a war machine) in action.

We were promised a break from Dalek stories... well, we got a year off. Apparently S7 will have Daleks. If you need to groan, get it out of your system, before I ask...

What do you expect from new-Who's "real Dalek debut?" They're pure, they're organized, they're loose in the cosmos. Thanks to a cut-away moment (The Pandorica Opens) we know a group of them makes alliances to save the universe from an exploding TARDIS -- meaning at some point they grow strong enough to reveal themselves to other races with an open hand -- err, sucker -- of truce. Risky move, so I suspect they have confidence of numbers at that point.

My own answer is, I hope for something like a mini-version of The Dalek Master Plan, or more recently The Long Game and BW/PotW, where their involvement is a mystery until it's too late. That is their M.O. after all, and the suspense lasts long enough to spin quite a story while we wait to see screaming pepperpots. And most of all I expect to see the Doctor lose big in that upcoming encounter. Big, but not in the standard ways we're all used to (losing a companion, losing his own life, etc). Maybe the Doctor is trying to figure out a way to revert the Time War without making things worse -- and the Daleks will advance his plans for him before he's ready. The Daleks do have a way of screaming "Anything the Doctor can do, we can do better" -- and he's already rebooted the universe in this incarnation.
