Jackson Smith, the father of Mickey, had worked as a key-cutter at Clifton's Parade. Some time before 2002 he abandoned his son and went to Spain. Mickey went to live with his grandmother, Rita-Anne.

The father of Ricky Smith, Mickey's counterpart, had done the same. (TV: Rise of the Cybermen)
