The term "brainy specs" was a nickname invented by the Tenth Doctor to describe glasses that the Fifth Doctor didn't "even need" but that "made him look a bit clever". He then admitting to using such faux glasses himself. (TV: Time Crash)

It was unknown whether the First Doctor's glasses were also "brainy specs", or if he actually had a genuine need for them. (TV: The Time Meddler, et al) By contrast, the Eleventh Doctor claimed that Amy Pond's round glasses, which he eventually appropriated, did in fact make reading easier for him. (TV: The Angels Take Manhattan) Unlike all other glases carried by the Doctor, Amy's glasses were known to have been the result of an optometrist's prescription. (TV: The Power of Three)
