Cloister Bell

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

The Cloister Bell was an alarm bell located in the Cloister Room inside TARDISes. The Cloister Bell was used in the most serious emergencies, emergencies so grave that even the TARDIS itself (and its inhabitants) was in danger. Its distinctive, sonorous, ringing sound resembled that of a large church bell. It could be answered by anyone inside the TARDIS. The Fourth Doctor told Adric that if he needed him, Adric could sound the Cloister Bell, indicating it could be manually activated. (TV: Logopolis)

Instances when the Cloister Bell was heard

Other information

  • The Cloister Bell was not activated during an incident in which the Fast Return Switch malfunctioned, threatening the TARDIS and its crew. (TV: The Edge of Destruction) Nor did it sound when the TARDIS' doors opened just before it materialised, causing it to run out of control, making the TARDIS reduced in size. Instead an emergency klaxon was heard. (TV: Planet of Giants)
  • Indeed, the bell was never heard until towards the end of the Fourth Doctor's life.
  • Oddly, the Cloister Bell was not activated (or, for whatever reason, not heard) when the TARDIS was about to explode. (TV: The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang)

Behind the scenes

  • The sound of the Cloister Bell was made by hitting a gong in a pool of water.
