Roses was a Brief Encounter short story published in DWM 214.
Summary
Somewhere in space, following the events of The Daleks' Master Plan, the First Doctor tends the roses in a garden, while Steven rests in the TARDIS. But the Doctor's plans for a spot of relaxing gardening are short-lived, as a sinister black spinning obelisk suddenly appears in the sky...

References
- Susan's name in High Gallifreyan was Arkytior, which means "rose". This means that the first companion of both the Classic and New series were both named "Rose", the latter of which being a human from Earth and was born with the English term for the word as her name.
- The Doctor wears fingerless woollen gloves whilst tending the roses.
Notes
- The events of this story take place after TV: The Daleks' Master Plan, as well as during those of TV: The Five Doctors.
- PROSE: The Five Doctors describes the Doctor at this time as being "a Doctor nearing the end of his first incarnation" (quote, page 10).
