Ringway was a crew member on a massive space freighter in the middle of space. He did not really like Captain Briggs because he got ignored by her and when everyone found out about he was working with the Cybermen he held Captain Briggs, Berger, Adric and The Doctor hostage. When The Cybermen found out about even more than ten crew when Scott and his troops moved in they killed Ringway because they thought he lied.
