The Sun Filters were used to shield Platform One from the heat of the dying Sun.

While the emissaries were witnessing the planet Earth, Cassandra used Robotic Spiders to sabotage the sun filters, along with the station's force field in order to make it look like a hostage situation, killing everyone there and gaining money from the ransom. (DW: The End of the World)
