Reuben was an old friend of Clara Oswin Oswald's family. Clara tended to refer to him as "Uncle Reuben", though he didn't share any connections, through marriage or blood, to her family. He died at some point from unknown causes, but Clara still has fond memories of him. (PROSE: Shroud of Sorrow)
