On 28 July 1942, the American Federation of Musicians' recording ban started, effectively putting American musicians on strike. It prevented Duke Ellington — and others — from recording their music, and wouldn't be lifted until the union came to a satisfactory agreement on 1 December 1944. (PROSE: Atom Bomb Blues)
