Joseph Lister was a physician and academic from Glasgow under whose tutelage the First Doctor took a medical degree. The newly-regenerated Second Doctor told Polly that he got the degree 1888, (TV: The Moonbase) a fact later confirmed by the Fourth Doctor when he put it on his CV (PROSE: System Shock) and the Fifth Doctor when he volunteered for medical duty in the American Civil War.
