Lord Charles Cranleigh once told the Fifth Doctor that the Cranleigh Hall cricket ground had a green wicket, which he said made the ball "keep low". (TV: Black Orchid)

Behind the scenes

No greater details were given in the story, perhaps because writer Terence Dudley assumed his mostly British audience would simply understand the phrase. As was evident in the long shots of Peter Davison bowling, however, a "green wicket" was one where the grass was a bit longer and not so finely shorn.
