Mike Gatting was a cricketer who had signed a cricket bat owned by the Fifth Doctor. When the Dark demanded the TARDIS, the Doctor somewhat facetiously offered this bat as an alternative prize because it was "worth a fair bit". (PROSE: Fear of the Dark)
